bio

Stacey Johnson-Brown is a black American painter who finds inspiration to paint in the ordinariness of life. The paintings seek to illustrate the artist's personal reflections on womanhood, motherhood, and blackness as well as the idea of collecting a visual record of thoughts over time. Painting her day-to-day goings-on, the artist attempts to further define her specific place in the tradition of painting. While the content in the paintings bears some resemblance to the interests that were prevalent during the pop art movement in that the subject matter often contains popular imagery, they also reveal a deep-seated concern in revealing the human-ness of the painter, individuality and self-expression through color, visible brushwork, and intimacy in scale. Work by Stacey Johnson-Brown may be found in the University of Delaware Museums Collection as well as various private collections in the Mid–Atlantic region.
